Of everything we do at The Jessica Project, the question we get asked most is about the name of our groups. Chai and Chat. People expect something more clinical, and that is exactly the point.
A cup of tea is a beginning
Nobody has ever healed on demand. But almost everyone, in almost every culture, knows what it means when someone puts the kettle on. It means sit down. It means stay a while. It means you are welcome here. For many of the women we walk beside, chai carries the sounds and smells of home, and of being looked after. We built our groups around that feeling on purpose.
What a session is actually like
Warm drinks, snacks, crafts, and conversation that goes wherever the room wants it to go. Some women talk. Some women just sit with us for weeks before they say much at all, and that is completely fine. There is no register, no referral needed, and nobody is ever asked to share their story. Children are welcome, so caring responsibilities never have to be a barrier.
Why it works
Abuse isolates. It teaches you that no one will understand and that no one can be trusted. An ordinary room full of women who simply get it, with no pressure and no expectations, quietly proves both of those things wrong. That is not a small thing. For many of us it was the first step in everything that came after.
Chai and Chat meets monthly in the Bracknell area, and our Online Circles bring the same warmth to wherever you are. Find the next dates on our events page, or get in touch and we will tell you everything you need to know. Come exactly as you are.
